Hella: New Ipecac signing join the roster!

hella-bottom.jpg

We’re very happy indeed to welcome Sacramento’s newly expanded and reformed experimental rock outfit HELLA to our ranks! Their latest album ‘There's No 666 In Outer Space’ sees longtime Hella members Zach Hill (drums) and Spencer Seim (guitar) joined by an extended line up. Most notable is Nevada City-based butcher-come-singer Aaron Ross, plus new guitarist Josh Hill (Zach's cousin) and bassist Carson McWhirter, who were in fact in a pre-Hella band alongside the aforementioned duo.

The result is precise and frenetic, with Spencer’s wild riffs and solo’s propelled by Zach’s relentless hyperspeed drumming, and formed loosely into song structures by Aaron’s vocal additions. Its refreshingly different in its approach, and caught the attention of Mike Patton, who immediately signed them to his label Ipecac…

Having toured with hardcore band Dillinger Escape Plan in 2005, and spending most of this year blowing away huge audiences far and wide on tour with System of a Down and The Mars Volta, you’d be forgiven for taking Hella to be some sort of indie metal outfit. Quite what they are I struggle to articulate, but its fresh, original, and getting bigger by the day…

Send your offers to gee [at] littlebig.org.uk, and lookout for more news on future touring plans to be announced here.

BRISTOL VENUE CHANGE INFO>
The venue had to be changed in Bristol due to the Bierkeller management totally screwing us all over. 2 weeks before a almost sold out show they got word from central management that they had to cancel the show on 10th Oct to make way for a new student night across all their venues, unbelievable! Luckily the promoters were able to move the show to Trinity, all tkts are transferable.

Darren Johnston - Array perform 'Outre'

Outre-image-2.jpg

Darren Johnston is one of the the UK's most audacious and talented choreographers, and his dance group Array are sending shockwaves through the scene. Their productions exist on the bleeding edge of the artform, always pushing conceptual boundaries and inventing new forms and techniques, and collaborating with the most influential musicians around.

Their latest production, 'Outre', is a dark and tense trip into a ragged victorianesque world. Dancers move in and out of complete blackness through slowly creeping smoke in a freakshow cabaret of shadows and nightmares, set to commisioned music by Jamie Lidell, Christian Vogul, Max De Wardner and more... its a disturbing yet exhilerating experience.

Check out his promo video here:

Upcoming show at The QEH - Feb 16th 2008.

Outre will perform in Europe in spring & summer - email ned [at] littlebig.org.uk with enquiries.

Kid 606 - Welcome to Littlebig

KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU

kid606roster.jpg

(violent sounds from violent fans, enemies, journalists, publicists, peers, and the kid) I'm getting tired of these "complex" artists. Complex is OK if the sounds have some musical quality. This guy has no talent -- unless the ability to string together bleeps and machinery hum is considered to be quality "music". You have to have a sense of humour to appreciate it, but I just love it. It's the sound of one man just being a right noisy bastard and making a bleedin' racket, in a creative way. This inaccessible stuff is what gives electronic music a bad name. Whatever happened to driving bass lines, rocking drum machines, and euphoric melodies? KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU The kid is an indiepunkgabberidmraverblastbasher of the highest caliber, which means not everything he releases (which is a lot of material over all) snuggly fits into one genre or one style. The guy's all over the place, often from release to release, so it would seem the best way to approach his output is first off with a very open mind. I've always though of Kid606 as a third rate Autechre. Guys like him are a dime-a-dozen in the IDM scene. If it wasn't for Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Boards of Canada, IDM would be a dead scene. I "dig" all types of music. I mainly gravitate toward anything electronic, and that's why this got a review from me. It's a free country. I can call it like I see it! Kid606 sucks, no matter what you call his style of "music". I'm unclear on how Kid606 could be even remotely compared to artists like autechre, aphex twin, etc. idm would be dead without them? bullshit! idm was dying, and it took people like Kid606, blectum from blechdom, cex, lesser, matmos, etc. to revitalize it. bay area hardcore. KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU It just goes to show, that true talent is always surrounded by controversy. Kid606 and his labelmates have a Tourette's syndrome-like compulsion to deflate the pomposity of electronic music. From his early, post-gabba 12"s on San Diego's electro-punk label Vinyl Communications to the occasionally mindblowing, always vivacious HipHop and R&B cut-ups that he's been doing recently, Kid606 has flouted copyright laws with more glee than anyone since Negativeland and The Bomb Squad. KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU I'm making music in the same way that the original raga and hip hop was made and it's just total pilfering of ideas. You've just got to put your own mark on it. If his recent output is any indication, he'll be a major entry in the books someday, mainly because of the breadth of his work. AS YOU READ THIS, HE'S ALREADY ON TO THE NEXT 400 THINGS. Do not bowdlerize our subculture just so you can finally get your goofy looking nerd asses laid. I love Autechre, I love all that stuff, but I'm not trying to sound like them and I'm not trying to do anything in line with these IDM people. They're so easy to offend, and they're so into a certain thing, that anything I do will offend them. In the end, I want to offend people like that. KILL SOUND BEFORE SOUND KILLS YOU ...they named the "100 Most Dangerous Men On Earth". At number 93 - ahead of Bill Gates and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, and just behind former Cheers star Ted Danson - was "the Sid Vicious of Techno", Kid606. I'm pretty tone deaf and that's the backbone of traditional musicianship. Don't think of it in terms of pitches. Think like, you can make any sound in the world: which ones do you like? Kong - Welcome to Littlebig

Kong5_450.jpg

Manchester three-piece Kong’s relentless sonic assault against all things conventional and boring gathered momentum in 2009 with the release of their eagerly debut album, Snake Magnet.

Previous singles ‘Blood of a Dove’ and ‘Leather Penny’ blazed a trail for their unconventional sound and showcased their devastating ability to craft heavy, ferocious punk songs. These early glimpses promised much; and Snake Magnet did not disappoint. Bruising bass-lines, face-meltingly intense guitar riffs, beautifully fashioned soundscapes and hauntingly bleak and isolated vocals combined to form an album dripping with existential angst.

Rock A Rolla, Artrocker, Drowned in Sound and many more felt Snake Magnet worthy enough to sit in their best albums of 2009 lists.

In April 2010 Kong set off on tour with 65daysofstatic around Europe and caused jaws to drop in every city. World domination and abomination will follow in 2011.

“Welcome to Kong's world. It's a world of heavy punk and cellotaped faces (leading to pretty scary gigs). You'd be mad not to enter – and you'll probably leave it madder still” Artrocker

“Manchester mob definitively kick the pop out of the punk with this raw and abrasive track with a hefty dose of Fugazi lurking beneath the surface.” Kerrang

“Kong might just be the best band in Britain right now. Ferociously powerful, stunningly inventive, and equal doses of scary and humorous.” Dirtyzine

“The first time I saw them play I felt a burning sensation on my arm and realised that I had developed eczema.” Andrew Falkous 2008 (McLusky/Future of the left)

“The most exciting band in the UK right now” Dan Carter - BBC Radio 1 Rock show

“Breathlessly loud, startlingly daring, intentionally different; Snake Magnet is not for those with no sticking power or love of rock at it’s most blisteringly raw.” Drowned in Sound (album of the month)
